Volga Cascade Architecture
for Rushydro media-project «Lyudi Sveta» (People of Light), 2014
The post-war period was the heyday of the Soviet hydropower industry. The country needed to be restored, and hydroelectric stations were built on the rivers – sources of energy for a new, peaceful life. These constructions were all-Union, they were attended by entire Komsomol brigades.
Almost all hydroelectric stations on the Volga are monuments to creative labor, bringing light to people. Their unique architecture captured the mood of that time. These are symbols of the era, a kind of cultural code, embodied in the special decoration of buildings and the landscape of hydropower facilities.
